Exploring Mid-Market Strategies for Big Data Governance

Data generation has increased exponentially in recent years with an estimated 2.5 exabytes of new data being generated per day. The Government Accountability Office estimates that by 2025 there could be between 25 and 50 billion devices connected to the Internet and generating data. Even with the vast amount of data available to them, organizations currently effectively use less than 5% of their available data. Many data scientists are struggling to adopt effective data governance practices as they transition from traditional data analysis to big data analytics. These challenges arise from issues relating to data that are too vast, unstructured, and moving too fast to be managed by traditional means. Data governance of big data requires new strategies to deal with the volume, variety, and velocity attributes of big data. The traditional methods, frameworks, strategies, and tools for data governance and analysis are outdated and no longer adequate for processing the vast amount of data available to organizations today, thus making current strategies ineffective for handling big data. In this presentation we will review the current state of the art in big data analytics and data governance.

Dr. Ken Knapton is a veteran of the Utah tech community currently working as CIO for Merrick Bank, and is a member of the AIM board. He will be presenting the results of his recent doctoral study entitled “Exploring mid-market strategies for big data governance”.
